Douglas Gillespie Thomson Jr. ’42

Body

DOUG DIED suddenly on July 29, 1992, of heart failure, in Tenafly, NJ, his home for the past 40 years. He had retired three years ago from the presidency of the Shield Electric Company of West Paterson, makers of electric railroad equipment.

T Doug came to Princeton from Lawrenceville and left us before the end of senior year to serve in the Army Corps of Engineers. As a first lieutenant, he served in North Africa, Europe, and the Philippines. Altogether he spent six and one half years on active duty, including recall during the Korean War.

After the war, he spent 17 years with the J. T. Ryerson Co., specialty steel fabricators, before joining the Shield Electric Company.

Doug was a devoted Princetonian, taking great pleasure in showing his family around the campus during the many reunions and football games he attended. He and his wife, Sis, came to the 50th for a short time and had at least one day to greet classmates and old friends. Doug served on the board of governors of the Englewood Field Club, reflecting his great interest in athletics, which was shared by his entire family. They won many medals in swimming, football, and wrestling. He also was president of the Tenafly Community Chest.

To his widow, Sis; to his daughter, Patricia; to his sons Douglas III, William, and David; and to his ten grandchildren; the Class extends its most sincere condolences.
