Douglas Whitfield Calder ’43
DOUG DIED Oct. 16, 1991, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, of pneumonia, following a long and brave battle against emphysema. He was 71.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Doug entered Princeton from Lawrenceville in 1939. He was forced to leave college during WWII to undergo an operation for sarcoma, After his right leg was amputated, Doug returned to Brazil and graduated from Faculdade de Direito do Rio de Janeiro (Rio Law School) in 1951. He then became a partner of Littlejohn & Cia. in Sao Paulo as financial consultant to many foreign firms with subsidiaries in Brazil. These foreign clients included W. R. Grace, Pittshurgh Plate Glass, Quaker Oats, and Westinghouse Air Brake,
In 1975 Doug joined a Brazilian law office, where he remained until illness forced his retirement in 1991.
Despite the fact that he had only one leg, Doug continued throughout his life to practice his favorite Sports: golf, tennis, and swimming.
He is survived by his, widow, Victoria Bugara Calder, whom he married in 1953; a son, Douglas Malcolm; and one granddaughter.
