DICK BEAR, a distinguished scientist and academi­cian, died July 5, 1994, in Chapel Hill, N.C. He was a professor of molecular anatomy at U.N.C. from 1969 until he retired in 1978. Dick entered Princeton from the Miamisburg (Ohio) H.S., grad­uated summa cum laude in chemistry, and received several notable awards. He went on to Berkeley for his Ph.D. His outstanding academic career includ­ed 15 years at M.I.T. and service as dean at Iowa State and Boston Univ. His first wife, Madeline Borncamp, died in 1940. He married Josephine Hoyt in 1942 and she died in 1967. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mayhew Bear; two daughters, Mrs. Donald McTavish and Mrs. William Rugh; a stepson, Dr. Douglas Fambrough; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Jo­seph Coors and Mrs. Douglas Anderson; a sister, Mrs. Margaret Morrison; 15 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. The class extends its sincerest sympathy to all these relatives.
