Duane Reed Stuart Jr. ’27

Body

REED DIED on Apr. 20, 1990, where he wished-in Princeton. There he was born and brought up, as the son of a professor who taught Greek and Latin classical literatures. That heritage probably inspired his three years of teaching French at Milton Academy. His interest in literature was accompanied by a talent for financial management, which led to his long career with the Bankers Trust Co. The bank sent him to attract business in the Middle West and to London, where he was assistant manager of the office. In London he married Helen Beatrice McClure Smith, whom he had met in the U.S. Returning to America, the Stuarts lived in Princeton; Washington, D.C.; Rye, N.Y.; and (from 1959) again in Princeton. Reed rose to be V.P. of the bank, and retired after a career he loved and enjoyed.

His life embraced an astonishing variety of other interests and activities, including some around his beloved summer home at Greensboro in Vermont's "Northeast Kingdom." He golfed, played tennis, traveled far and wide, and, wherever he lived, embraced various community services. During WWII he devoted his business talents to the Army Service Forces, became a lt. colonel, and won a commendation ribbon. He relished a long retirement in a house on the outskirts of Princeton, and joined his wife in regular attendance at Trinity Church.

We share a sense of loss and sympathize with Beatrice, his daughters Helen and Emilie; and grandsons Ian and Andrew.
