Dudley Evans ’41
A SERIES OF STROKES stilled the big heart of amiable, loyal, and dependable Dudley Evans on Aug. 24, 1993, in Cresswill, N.J. Dud's life linked his Princeton heritage from father, Stanley S. Evans '11 to son, J. Randall Evans '69.
A solid force in his lifelong axes of Englewood and Quissett Harbor, Dud's priorities were raising children and supporting causes through volunteer work and generous giving. Specifically, his gift at the last hour catapulted 1941 into Annual Giving history: the first college class anywhere to give its alma mater more than one million dollars.
Dud's demeanor, despite brilliant red hair, was serene; but beneath the surface, his passion was fervent. He supported his children's causes with zeal, time, and money: Randy (sports), Peter (acting), and Betsy (art). In addition, Dud's career was multifaceted: air force, airlines, consulting, investment counseling. Dud was a religious man, who worshipped formally at St. Paul's Church. Informally, he prayed for stripers in the fishing holes of Cuttyhunk and Menemsha and while racing his Herreshoffs, he supplicated stronger breezes on Buzzards Bay. As an alumnus, Dudley was devoted to Chez Henri and the summer reunions at Falmouth and Little Compton. He wore '41s outrageous orange baseball suit in Quissett's Fourth of July parades
His dear wife, Lynnie, died a year ago, but Dud is survived by Randy and Betsy; his brother, Frank C.; and two grandchildren, to whom we send our deepest sympathy.
