E. Bayley Buchanan ’45

Body

Bayley Buchanan died April 23, 2011.

A Pittsburgh native, he attended Shady Side Academy and Deerfield Academy, and entered Princeton following in the footsteps of his father, Edwin P. Buchanan 1913, and preceding his brother, Eustace W. Buchanan ’50. He obtained his degree in biology in 1944 on an accelerated basis in Navy V-12.

Bayley graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1947, did an internship, and joined the Navy in 1949. There he met Agnes Tait, whom he married in 1950, and with whom he had four children, Ted, Linda, Richard, and Ellen. Bayley practiced surgery at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh from 1954 to 1973. In 1967 he went to Haiti, where he treated patients and performed surgery at the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer.

For over 60 years, he was devoted to Shadyside Presbyterian Church, where he served in numerous positions. Agnes returned to school in the 1970s, earned her bachelor’s degree, and became a gerontological nurse in 1987. She died of Alzheimer’s disease in 2010. Bayley took care of his wife with love and devotion for several years as her condition deteriorated.

In addition to his children, Bayley is survived by six grandchildren. The class extends its sympathy to the family.
