E. Hervey Evans Jr. ’47

Body

Hervey Evans died Feb. 6, 2000, of complications from cancer treatment. An enthusiastic supporter of Princeton and of '47, he twice served as southeastern v.p. of the class and was nominated for university trustee in 1971.

A 1943 graduate of Woodberry Forest, he served three years in the Army during WWII. Returning to Princeton, he graduated summa cum laude in economics and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Hervey also earned a Harvard MBA and studied agronomy at N.C. State to prepare for his lifetime vocation, the creation and management of family-owned agri-business firms. He was founder and chair of Cotton Incorporated, pres. and chair of Cotton Council Intl., and a member of the Business Council.

Hervey was known for his inner strength and wisdom, his love of humor and understanding of other people. He was a lifelong student, with interests ranging from nature, religion, and music, to national and world affairs. In his hometown of Laurinburg, N.C., he filled many church and civic leadership roles.

Hervey and his wife, Carolyn, celebrated their 50th anniversary in June with their five children, Carolyn Jackson and E. Hervey III, Anne, Grace, and Mary Pat Evans; his sister, Ann Borden Evans Melver, his three brothers, John Borden, McNair '52, and Murphy '54, and his 10 grandchildren, to all of whom the class extends its heartfelt sympathy.
