E. Stevens Declerque ’47

Steve is fondly remembered by his ’47 friends for his infectious joie de vivre.

He served in the Marine Corps for three years after a freshman semester in the summer of 1943. Returning in ’46, Steve roomed with Don Lourie, Bob Judson, and Bill Markus while starring on the Princeton varsity swim team. Sadly, he left Princeton in 1948 after two suspensions for disciplinary reasons involving driving and automobiles.

Steve went on to a most successful career at Time Inc., where he worked in international publications, eventually becoming director of Time International and then assistant publisher of Life International.

Steve and Barbara (his second wife) split their later years between Lake Worth, Fla., and St. Croix, Virgin Islands, where they enjoyed scuba diving and island life. They were frequently joined there by friends and relatives.

A member of Tiger Inn during his Princeton days, Steve was a fun-loving classmate. He lit up every room he entered with the warmth of his personality, his repertoire of jokes, his embroidered stories, and his ability to entertain. He truly was an “upbeat” guy.

Steve died Aug. 5, 2008. We send our fond memories and best wishes to Barbara and to Steve’s three children and six grandchildren.
