Buck died Nov. 15, 2019, at the Glen of Willow Valley Communities in Lancaster, Pa.

He prepared for Princeton at Shaker Heights (Ohio) High School and majored in chemical engineering. He played varsity football and track and was a member of Cannon Club. He earned a medical degree at Columbia and served in the U. S. Public Health Service from 1961 thru 1963.

He earned a master’s in public health at Yale in 1965. He taught at Yale Medical School and moved to the Philadelphia area in 1969, serving at Jefferson University, Bryn Mawr, Paoli, and Lankenau hospitals.

Earl was a marathon runner, golfer, and dog lover. Sandy and Earl moved to Colorado in 1994 to pursue new jobs and good skiing. He served as the head of the department of occupational health at Memorial Hospital, retiring in 2002. He then ran for Teller County coroner, serving two successive terms and commenting, “You can retire from a job, but you can’t retire the mind.” Following that he started writing a book titled High Country Coroner, which was never completed.

He is survived by Sandra; by his former wife, Janice; their daughter Jennifer; two grandchildren; stepdaughter Sheila; and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin B. Byrne.
