Edgar Landon Zeigler ’42
ED ZEIGLER died on Dec. 4, 1989, at Waterbury Hospital in Connecticut, after a brief illness. At the time of his death, Ed was a retired engineer of the Timex Corp., although he had spent most of his active business career in Massachusetts working for Northrop Aviation. He developed guidance systems for missiles, and his specialty was gyroscopes. He was responsible for many of the improvements to the guidance systems employed by the armed forces.
Ed came to Princeton from St. Alban's, majored in engineering, and served in naval aviation during WWII. He was stationed in Southern California, where he worked on improving airplanes used by the allied forces.
Ed will be remembered most for his tireless community involvement, especially in helping to develop housing for the poor. Although not a native of Waterbury, Ed decided to remain there after retiring from his job at Timex, working with the Green Community Service, an organization dedicated to the development of housing for the disadvantaged. His work on housing affordability and the economics of housing for low-income people is currently emulated by many groups in establishing guidelines for their projects. It was said that his work on behalf of various peace and justice groups, from local organizations to the United Nations, continues to benefit the community of man.
To his five children, Sam, Anna, Maggie, Alan, and Polly, the Class offers its most sincere condolences for their loss.
