Edgar M. Grider ’56

Body

ED GRIDER died of cancer on May 20, 1989, following his wife Evelyn in death by just about a year. Ed came to Princeton from his native Louisville, Ky., and majored in religion. He won his numerals in freshman football, was president of Quadrangle Club, and served as V.P. of the senior class.

Ed, who graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1959 and was ordained in the New Orleans Presbytery shortly thereafter, held the formal office of associate for mission at the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta, but this title reveals little of his distinguished career. Beginning in 1961, when he came to Atlanta, Ed devoted his energies to a variety of community ministries and organizations, both religious and governmental, that dealt with the needs of the poor and underprivileged. He also served as an adjunct faculty member at the Candler School of Theology and the Columbia Theological Seminary, and published a number of articles and one book, Can I Make It One More Year (John Knox Press). Classmates will remember Ed's participation in the memorial service at our 25th reunion, and members of the P.A.A. of Georgia will recall his work on the schools committee,

Ed is survived by his mother, Mrs. Maxye Grider; his brother Paul; his daughter Ellen Bass '81 and her husband, Jeffrey Bass '81; his daughter Susan Grider; and three stepchildren, Lynn Hanna, Ray Merritt, and Jon Merritt. To all of them our sympathies are extended.
