Edgar Norman Powers ’36

Body

Norman died of cancer Jan. 19, 2000, at home in Sequim, Wash.

He prepared at the Northwood School and regretted having to leave Princeton after his sophomore year. He attended the U. of Missouri, then graduated from the U. of Oklahoma in 1939 with a degree in journalism. He then worked for the Albany Press in Alabama as a reporter until 1941.

During WWII, he served in the Army, steadily rising in rank to lt.-col. in public relations and intelligence posts in the Pentagon. He retired in 1961. He then joined the State Department as an intelligence watch officer, retiring in 1973. In these two assignments he served a total of 32 years.

In 1978, he was ranked 34th nationally in the 65-70 age group and sixth in the Eastern Tennis Assn. During that year, he took Bitsy Grant, then ranked 10th nationally, to two tie breakers.

Norman returned to Princeton for the first time for our 50th reunion in 1986. He had a great time and expressed regrets that he had missed so many previous reunions. From then till his death, he spoke of his love for Princeton and was one of our best correspondents.

We understand that he had no survivors.
