Edgar A. Spencer ’36

Body

Our class secretary died in his sleep Nov. 14, 2010, in Falmouth, Maine, following two months of hospitalization, rehab, and hospice care.

Born in Johnstown, N.Y., Ed came to Princeton from the Albany Academy for Boys. At Princeton, he majored in politics, lettered in basketball and baseball, and was president of Campus Club.

After Princeton, Ed spent 40 years with Texaco in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and, for most of his career, Maine. After retiring from Texaco, he served as a mediator for the Maine judicial system from 1978 to 2001.

He was active in Meals on Wheels, State Street Church in Portland, and the United Fund, among other organizations. He helped found what today is the Portland Athletic Club and enjoyed playing tennis and golf. A devoted Princetonian and a stalwart of our class, Ed attended reunions regularly (including his 73rd), helped establish and run the PAA of Maine, organized ’36 mini-reunions, and served as our class secretary for several years before his death.
