Edgar Warren Wherry ’30

Body

ED WHERRY passed away June 19, 1993, in a skilled nursing facility after a twoyear battle with Lou Gherig's disease. His widow, Peg, was close by in the same retirement complex and was able to spend a lot of time with him.

Ed came from a long line of Princeton men, including his grandfather, father 1895, and two uncles 1893. He prepared at Lawrenceville. At Princeton, he roomed with Jack Feid, John Turnbull, and, in senior year, with Bob Churchill. He was a member of Campus Club, where he served a term as president.

Except for a few years in the naval reserve during WWII, his entire career of 38 years was spent in merchandising. He started with Lord & Taylor in 1930 and rose through the ranks to become assistant to the general merchandise manager. In 1955, he joined T. W. Robinson in L.A. as a V.P. and general merchandise manager. In 1960, he returned to NYC to become president and director of Bonwit Teller and the Hoving Corp. In 1962, he joined Filene's in Boston as V.P. and director. He retired in 1968.

Ed married Margaret Stuart in Aug. 1930. They had one daughter, Anne (who married John E. Gorman); three grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren. Ed was a successful man and we share the loss of his passing with his fine family.
