Edmund Delong Bowman ’34

Delong Bowman, head of the A. Smith Bowman Distillery, a family business that has produced Virginia Gentleman bourbon at Sunset Hills Farm in Fairfax Cty., Va., for more than 50 years, died of pneumonia on Oct. 20, 1989, at his home in The Plains, Va. When he, his father, and his brother, the late A. Smith Bowman Jr. '27, founded the business in 1935, it was the only legal whiskey-distilling operation in Virginia. In recent years, he was in declining health and was less active in managing the business, which moved to Fredericksburg, Va., in 1987.

In 1927, DeLong's father bought Sunset Hills Farm, a 4,000-acre estate that became the planned community of Reston. As a young man, DeLong was a skilled equestrian and for several years was master of the Fairfax Hunt. He was a director of the Fauquier Bank and the Fauquier Hospital, a trustee of V.M.I., and a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, the Commonwealth Club of Virginia, and the Chevy Chase Club,

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Helen Potts Bowman; two daughters, Katherine Bowman Burton and Nena Bowman Adams; and three grandchildren. To them we extend our sincere sympathies.
