Edmund Sherwin Finegold ’44

Ed died Jan. 11, 2010, in Tucson, Ariz., where he had lived with his wife, Donnie, since 1997. He was 86.  

Born in New York City, Ed came to us from the Peddie School, where he was active in journalism and music and graduated cum laude. At Princeton, he took part in several intramural and interclub sports, was a member of Court Club, the band, and the “Smoke Rings Quintet.”

He roomed next to Bob VanWagoner freshman year at 17 Edwards Place, later living in Pyne and Lockhart before leaving in May 1943 to serve 17 months in the Army as a combat engineer sergeant in Europe.  

After earning a bachelor’s degree in politics in 1946, he received a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Ed became an intelligence specialist with the Air Force and devoted his career to the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency in Washington until 1988. He resided mainly in Chevy Chase, Md.

In Arizona, Ed and Donnie hiked, read books, and he was a happy sports and political “junkie.” In addition to Donnie, he is survived by his son, Mitchell; a daughter, Allyn; a granddaughter, Leah; and his sisters, Louise Stamelman and Mildred Adelson. Our appreciation goes to all for sharing this kind gentleman of peace with us.
