Edward C. Devereux ’35

Body

Eddie Devereux died Jan. 2, 1995, in a nursing home in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., after several years of failing health. The class has lost a gentle man of friendliness and simplicity, who was a devoted Princetonian. Ed was born in N.Y.C. He graduated from Hackley School, where he was a football star. During his years at Princeton, Ed's home was in Baltimore. At Princeton, he roomed with Bill Beatson and Tom Wilson. He majored in politics and was a member of Tower Club.

After college, Ed worked in Baltimore for a brief time in banking and insurance, then moved to the Washington area, where he was involved in real estate and property management. In 1949, he married Abbie Lee Fordham, and they lived in Takoma Park, Md. In 1952, they renovated the old Devereux family home near Concord, N.H., where they lived until 1976. In retirement, they moved to New Smyrna Beach. Ed and Abbie Lee attended all our major reunions and most of Florida minis.

Eddie is survived by his widow, Abbie Lee; stepdaughter Carolyn Fordham; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The class extends its sympathy to all.
