Edward J. Klopp Jr. ’44

Body

Ed died Dec. 17, 2008, in his retirement community in Brevard, N.C.

He was born in Rosemont, Pa., prepped at Haverford, and was with us until earning his bachelor’s degree in 1944. Ed then earned a medical degree at Jefferson Medical College and took his residency at the University of Michigan Hospital.

As a member of the Army reserve, he earned a battle star and the rank of captain in Japan and Korea in 1953. On his return, he conducted a long and busy practice in thoracic surgery in Battle Creek, Mich. He then served for a period as chief of surgery at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, and happily concluded his career with six years at an Anglican hospital in Tanzania, Africa. He was a member of an Episcopal Church in Brevard.

Ed married Jane Konefass in 1951. He is survived by his second wife, Susan; a son, E. Jonathan III; two daughters, Betsy Bennett and Ellie; two stepsons, Robert and Charles Melton; one stepdaughter, Leslie McClane; a grandson; and several step-grandchildren. We extend our condolences to them all.
