Edward J. Naumann ’57

Body

ED DIED June 4, 1994, at his home in Pittsburgh, the city of his birth, after a courageous battle with Lou Gehrig's disease. He had served as pastor of St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church for 25 years, until illness forced him to retire in Sept. 1992. He was especially active in developing effective community-service programs and in ministering to the elderly.

At Princeton, Ed was an economics major and did additional work in the religion department. He was a familiar figure in the dining halls, where he ultimately served as sr. assistant head bus boy. Ed was active in Orange Key, earned his numerals as a catcher in freshman baseball, and served as a U-store trustee. A member of Cannon Club, he roomed with Ed Giles, Dick Merhige, Jerry Moyar, Barry Nann, and John Ruvane in his junior and senior years.

Ed married Joan Gurtner, his grade-school sweetheart, immediately upon graduation. He went on to earn his master of divinity degree from Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, Ohio. In 1961, he began a Lutheran parish in Bohemia, N.Y., and served there for six years before being called to Pittsburgh. Ed is survived by his wife and helpmate, Joan; his five children; his four grandchildren; a sister; and his parents.

Ed's strength of character, good cheer, and leadership will be sorely missed by the many hundreds of people in his extended family, church, schools, and the community he served so ably. His life will remain an inspiration to his Princeton classmates, who loved him.
