Edward Joseph Maude ’49

Body

WE LOST A STALWART class member when Ted Maude succumbed to lung cancer Oct. 13, 1993. Ted was born Aug. 6, 1924, in East Orange, N.J., and attended Kent School. He then joined the army and served as an infantry first sergeant in Europe and North Africa from Dec. 1942Nov. 1945. After the army, he transferred to Princeton from Virginia Military Institute, majored in economics, played varsity football and baseball, and belonged to Cap & Gown.

After graduating with honors in June 1948, Ted worked in the credit department of Chemical Bank and Trust Co. In 1949, he married Suzanne Norman Fleet, and they had two children. He was treasurer of Greenwich Savings Bank before moving on to United Mutual Savings Bank, where he became chairman and C.E.O. He retired in 1983. He remarried, to the former Ann Lang, in 1972.

Ted was a confirmed "doityourselfer" at their homes in Essex Fells, N.J., and later New Bern, N.C., and their beloved summer home at Boothbay Harbor, Maine, where he could work on the property, sail, fish, have clam bakes, and swim "in spite of the cold water," Ted is survived by Ann, son William L., daughter Cynthia Sherman, stepdaughters Beverly Espinosa and Elizabeth Cosgrove, stepson Robert W. Balmos, and Five grandchildren. Our hearts go out to them all at the loss of this highly principled, hearty, and caring man.
