Edward L Carpenter ’26
ED CARPENTER, well known in the Cleveland, Ohio, community as an outstanding citizen and, in the 60s, as a "banker's banker" died on Oct. 31, 1989, following an unexpected coronary attack. He prepared at University School of which he was a lifelong supporter, serving on its board of trustees and as its treasurer. At Princeton Ed won his numerals in swimming and was a member of Terrace. After graduation, Ed prepared for a banking career by doing graduate work at Rutgers. He then spent his working life with Central National Bank of Cleveland, starting there as a teller in 1928. He served as chairman and C.E.O. from 1967 until 1971, during which time his leadership was evident in many ways, including the construction of a new headquarters building.
Following retirement, Ed gave generously of his time and talents to his Cleveland community. Among other activities, he served as a trustee and treasurer of United Way. He was a lifetime member of Plymouth Church, Shaker Heights, and a former chairman of its board of trustees.
Ed was a loyal member of '26 and in his family are listed a number of Princetonians, including his brother, John '17; nephews, John '49 and Noble '51; sons, William '51 and Frank '58; and a granddaughter, Betty Carpenter '90. Ed is survived by his wife Elizabeth, his sons, and a daughter, Elizabeth C. Listerman, all of Cleveland, and by seven grandchildren, to all of whom we extend our sympathy.
