Edward L. McMillan Jr. ’57

Reds died June 18, 2010, after a long bout with Alzheimer’s.

Reds was born in Pittsburgh and came to Princeton from Lower Merion (Pa.) High School. At Princeton, he majored in classics and joined Ivy Club. He played varsity baseball for three years as a catcher and was captain senior year. Reds had a tryout with the St. Louis Cardinals.  

Curt Dohan, his Lower Merion compatriot, was his roommate for three years; younger brother, Bill ’60, was his roommate senior year.

Reds’ father, Edward L. McMillan ’26, was captain of Princeton’s football team in 1925. The McMillan family was proud to have captains of two Princeton teams.  

Reds married Jane Stokes in 1958. After his Navy service, Reds taught Latin and Greek and pursued a master’s degree in classics at Bryn Mawr. In 1967 he earned a doctorate in education from Harvard. For six years, he was a schools superintendent in Ohio and Pennsylvania. In 1974, he joined a family business in Connecticut and moved his family to Middletown.

Reds served as class president from 1957 to 1962.

In addition to his wife, Reds is survived by four children, Margaret, Lucy, Elizabeth and Edward III; four siblings; and eight grandchildren. The class joins the family in praise and gratitude for a fine leader and friend.
