Edward William Bushman Howell ’49
We lost a brave soul and theatrical talent on June 2, 1989, when Ed Howell died of complications following a stroke while he was battling cancer of the esophagus.
Ed was born on May 8, 1928, a son of the late Kenneth de Barberie Howell '11 and Katherine Bushman. He prepared for Princeton at Milwaukee Country Day School. At Princeton, he majored in politics and was a member of the Chicago Club, the Student Federa1ists, the Bridge Club, and the Players Guild. In the latter, he developed an interest in the theater that continued throughout his life. After graduation, Ed became an agent of the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Co. in Milwaukee. He then lived in California for a while. By the early 1960s, he had gravitated to N.Y.C. and the world of off-Broadway theater, which he enjoyed to the fullest. He studied acting with the Goodman Drama Group and for some time worked as a page at NBC. A freelance director of off-Broadway shows at the time of our 25th reunion, he responded to our questionnaire by writing simply:
"My goals, hopes, plans for the future—just more of the same!" In recent years, Ed worked largely on off-off Broadway productions and built a profitable antique business.
Ed's closest friends in our class were Pax and Louise Dunn, and he was a strong shoulder for Louise to lean on after Pax died. He is survived by a brother, Richard B., and a longtime friend and associate, Robert Maher. To each of them we extend our deepest sympathies.
