Edwin A. Baldwin Jr. ’52

Body

Ed Baldwin died suddenly at work of a massive heart attack on Jan. 6, 1988. Ed's family was especially grateful that, shortly before his death, he had spent time with his son, Edwin III, a helicopter pilot in the Navy who was stationed in the Persian Gulf during 1987.

After graduation, Ed was commissioned as an officer in the field artillery and was assigned to Ft. Sill, Okla. Later sent to the Far East, Ed joined other classmates in front-line observation posts in Korea. He was captured on Finger Ridge, spent seven weeks as a P.O.W., and was returned on Aug. 25, 1953, during the prisoner exchange. He was awarded the Silver Star, and his battalion received a Presidential Citation for its participation in the Battle of Kumsong Bulge, in July 1953.

Ed graduated from Harvard Law School in 1957. After a clerkship at the firm of McCarter and English in Newark, NJ., he joined the legal dept of Chubb and Son, Inc. Ed subsequently became V.P. and counsel of the Chubb Group of insurance companies.

Family and community were central to Ed's life. About 1960, he and Sheila bought a home in rural Morris County, NJ., where they devoted their energy to repairs, gardening, and child rearing. Sally, Jane, and Edwin III were born there, joining Helen, Elizabeth, and Gail. To them and to Ed's mother, Louise T. Baldwin, we extend our deepest sympathy. His father, Edwin A. Baldwin '24, predeceased him.
