Edwin H. Shutt Jr. ’50
ED SHUTT died at home in Oyster Bay, N.Y., Dec. 23, 1994. A native of St. Louis, Ed served a year in the Navy and attended Principia College for one year before joining the class in 1947. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa in mechanical engineering, played varsity basketball, and was a member of Cottage Club.
After graduation, Ed joined Procter & Gamble. Except for two years during the Korean War with the Corps of Engineers, he stayed with the company until 1977. He became v.p., international. From 1977-81, he served Clorox in San Francisco as its president and C.E.O. In 1981, he moved to Long Island to assume the presidency of Tambrands. He was C.E.O. of that company from 1982-89. After retiring, he and Mary divided their time between Long Island and Hilton Head, S.C.
Despite his many corporate reassignments in early years, Ed always stayed involved in community activities, including Princeton alumni affairs. During his 13 years on Long Island, he served both the Long Island Philharmonic and the Nassau County Boy Scout Council. As president of the latter, he was following in the tradition of Teddy Roosevelt, the first president of that council.
In addition to Mary, his wife of 41 years, Ed is survived by son Edward, daughters Anne Collier and Amy Narishkin, and two grandchildren. To all of them, the class extends its sympathy.
