Elizabeth A. Shollenberger ’78
Liz died Sept. 5, 2019.
Liz came to Princeton from Ohio’s Circleville High School as co-valedictorian and the first graduate in memory to attend Princeton.
In addition to academic success that won her Phi Beta Kappa honors, Liz, a WWS major, introduced thousands to the campus as an Orange Key tour guide during all four undergrad years and two summers. And it was at Princeton that she met Tim James ’78, her husband of 29 years and partner of 42 years. Liz was an intensely loyal member of Charter Club, to which she returned yearly while maintaining a Reunions attendance streak through 2019.
Following her 1981 graduation from Yale Law School, Liz worked at three New York City law firms and taught at New York University Law School before finding her career niche as a Legal Services attorney, representing indigent clients in the Bronx and Queens in civil matters for more than 20 years. In 2007 she received the New York City Bar Association’s Legal Services Award. In January 2017, she became a city court judge in White Plains, N.Y.
Liz was also very active in Democratic politics, serving as elected Democratic district leader for Greenwich Village from 1986 to 1995, and as city chair of the White Plains Democratic Party from 2003 to 2016.
In addition to Tim, Liz is survived by her mother, Nancy Shollenberger, and her half-sister, Diane Kuipers.
