Elliott J. Collins *52

After serving in the Army during World War II, Collins attended the College of Charleston and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1949. In 1952, he earned a Ph.D. in biology from Princeton.

Collins began his professional career in the pharmaceutical industry with the Upjohn Co. in 1952. In 1962, he joined the Schering Corp. as a senior scientist, and remained until retiring in 1985. During his career, he was involved with the development of new drugs such as Diprosone, a topical anti-inflammatory agent. Collins was also a contributing author of 37 articles published in peer-reviewed journals.

In retirement, he served for 23 years as a volunteer firefighter in his New Jersey community. A friend once described him as being like French bread — crusty on the outside, but soft on the inside.

Collins is survived by Betty, his wife of 62 years, a daughter, and a son, and two grandchildren.
