Ellsworth L. Childs ’50

Body

ELLSWORTH LUTHER “BUD” CHILDS died Dec. 1, 1994, three weeks after a carotid artery operation. The son of Ellsworth Childs '16, Bud graduated from Darrow School and saw action in Europe in WWII. He joined Elm Club and graduated with honors in economics.

After graduation, Bud worked as a sales correspondent for Deluke Check Printers in N.Y.C. and joined Thorens in 1953. He later became president of Elpa Marketing Industries and C.E.O. of Thorens Corp. of America, whose Swiss parent manufactured music boxes, lighters, hi-fi components, and other precision products.

Bud was active on the Princeton Schools Committee for many years, both in Garden City and in Westhampton, where he lived at the time of his death. He was also the founder and guiding spirit of East End Hospice. A life member of the Westhampton Yacht Squadron, he had sailed in several Bermuda Races.

Bud is survived by Peggy, his wife of 42 years; two sons, William and Richard; and his sisters, Mary Nagle and Bebe Frielinghaus. To all of them, the class extends its deepest sympathy.
