Elwin James Salter ’39

EL, WHO DIED June 25, 1993, of gastric cancer, once wrote, "If your life work is interesting and you have a good family, you have a good life." By those standards, he certainly did. Graduating as a chemical engineer, he enjoyed a lifelong career as a friction material engineer, an expert in automotive brakelining, widely known and sought after. He traveled abroad extensively for Abex Corp, Mahwah, N.J., and upon retirement, became an international consultant. He spent five years in Tel Aviv, helping to build a brakelining plant for Israel. He also spent time in Bombay, India, teaching the rudiments of brakelining there.

The good family who contributed so much to his good life were his widow, Alice, whom he married in 1944; their daughter Linda; son James; and four grandchildren. We share their sense of loss and offer them our sincere sympathy.
