Ernest Stephan Rost died in Boulder, Colo., Nov. 18, 1994. He was 60. Born in Breslau, Germany, Ernie came to this country as a child and entered Princeton from New Paltz {N.Y.) Central H.S. While at Princeton, Ernie joined Court Club and played in the band.

Following graduation, Ernie attended the Univ. of Pittsburgh, from which he obtained his doctorate in physics in 1961. From 1961-66, he was an instructor and then assistant professor in Princeton's physics department. He then moved to the Univ. of Colorado as an associate professor and was named full professor in 1970. Ernie was associate chairman of Colorado's physics department on two occasions, and had held that position at the time of his death.

Ernie, a fellow in the American Physical Society, received numerous honors for his research accomplishments, and he authored or coauthored more than 80 articles in the field of theoretical nuclear physics, including one just a few months before his death.

Ernie is survived by his second wife, Nancy Ray Saunders, and two daughters, Nancy and Linda Ellen. To all of them, the class extends its sympathy.
