Eugene Burke Oconnor ’36
GENE DIED Sept. 1, 1992, in Buffalo, N.Y.
At Princeton, he majored in philosophy, played polo, sang in the university choir, and was a member of Triangle and Colonial clubs. He voluntarily left Princeton early in his junior year, but returned in the fall of 1935.
He entered the navy in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1946 as a lieutenant. As executive officer of the U.S.S. CHEMUNG, he saw action in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
After college, he worked for the Crucible Steel Co. of America and the Peninsular Grinding Steel Co. In 1949, he founded O'Connor Abrasive Sales Co., which represented several manufacturers in the abrasives industry. E. B. O'Connor, Inc.; was formed in 1966 as a successor to his former company. During the next 15 years, he represented United Air Specialists of Cincinnati, which was engaged in electrostatic air pollution control devices for industry.
Gene was a former member of the Buffalo Club and the Black Rock Manufacturers Assn.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Genevieve Braun O'Connor; a son, E. Burke Jr.; two daughters, Patricia C. Whitfield and Maureen E. O'Connor; and two grandchildren.
The class will miss this talented, loyal Princetonian.
