Evan I. Farber, librarian emeritus at Earlham College, died peacefully Feb. 12, 2009, at home. He was 86.

Farber received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1944 and a master’s degree and a bachelor’s in library science in 1953. In between he had been a graduate student in politics at Princeton. From 1953 to 1962, he was a college librarian (mostly at Emory University from 1955 to 1962). Farber was then head librarian at Earlham College from 1962 to 1994.

Noted for his innovative program in bibliographic instruction, he was president of the Association of College and Research Libraries in 1977, and the organization’s Academic Research Librarian of the Year in 1980. Farber also received the American Library Association’s Miriam Dudley Instruction Librarian award in 1987. He published widely on bibliographic instruction and library administration. Farber held honorary doctoral degrees from St. Lawrence, Susquehanna, and Indiana universities.

Farber’s wife of 40 years, Hope, predeceased him in 2006. He is survived by four daughters.
