F. Jay Scribner ’67

Body

Jay Scribner, an insurance executive with Guaranty Co. of North America, died in his sleep April 7, 2009, at home in Williams Township, Pa.

Born in Stamford, Conn., Jay graduated from Mountain Lakes (N.J.) High School, where he was a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist and played football, basketball, and baseball.

At Princeton, he earned a bachelor’s degree in religion, writing his thesis on “The Catholic Church Today.” He was Catholic Youth Organization president, a co-chairman of the annual Red Cross drive, and was involved with the Trenton Tutorial Project. Jay joined Quadrangle Club and lived in 1901 his senior year with Nick Criss, Jay Higgins, Bill Koch, Allen Adler, and Peter Safir. His roommates remember him variously as even-tempered, kind, quite mature, and totally reliable as a friend. One said, “He held the rest of us together.”

Jay shared 28 years of loving marriage with his wife, the former Carroll Simon. He served on the finance committee of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Riegelsville, Pa., and was also a director of the fellowship deaconry in Liberty Corner, N.J. Those who loved him say his mission in life was to be the world’s best father — and he succeeded.

The class extends condolences to Carroll; his two sons; three daughters; six grandchildren; and the extended family.
