Fendall M. Clagett ’41
FEN CLAGETT, a devoted spokesman for Maryland's thoroughbred horse owners and trainers, died of congestive heart failure Dec. 24, 1989, at Anne Arundel General Hospital. A native of Washington, D.C., he majored in history at Princeton and commanded a PT boat in the Southwest Pacific, earning both the Bronze and Silver Stars. Prior to his retirement in 1975, Fen had been a partner in the old and respected food-brokerage firm of Clagett, Depuey & Kolher in Laurel, Md. He had bred and raised thoroughbreds on his Maryland farm since 1948. Horsebreeders give Fen the credit for getting through legislation which insures that purses paid to horsemen are regulated by law rather than by negotiation with individual tracks.
Fen was divorced some years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Christine Clagett and Fendine C. Wood, a son, Tjharda Van S. Clagett, a brother, two sisters, and four grandchildren. The Class extends them its sympathy.
