Francis M. Ellis ’45

PEPPER ELLIS DIM Dec. 2, 1993, of a heart attack at his home in N.Y.C. A very moving "Service of Thanksgiving" for Pepper's life was held at the Friends Meeting House at Gramercy Park in N.Y.C., at which many friends and family members contributed their remembrances of him. From the class, the service was

attended by Eginton, Langley, Hagendorn, and Throop.

Pepper prepared at Kingswood and lived in Farmington, Conn. During the war, he attended the army language school in Michigan, then served in the Pacific as a lieutenant in general headquarters, translating and interpreting Japanese. He then returned to Princeton and earned a degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Intl. Affairs in 1947. Pepper took his law degree from Columbia in 1949, then entered a lifelong association and partnership with the prestigious New York firm of Carter, Ledyard and Milburn, where he was for a time its managing partner. He specialized in corporate law and was an expert in abandonedproperty law.

Pepper and his first wife, Sally, had three children: a daughter' Carolyn T., and sons Francis L. and Nathan A. In addition, Pepper is survived by his widow, the former Marilyn Martin; three grandchildren; and his sister, Grace. The class extends deep sympathy to all.
