FRANK BENJAMIN HURT, distinguished educator and historian, died at home in Ferrum, Va., Feb. 16, 1992, at the age of 92. Born in Ferrum, Prof. Hurt was in the first graduating class of Ferrum Training School, in 1919, and received a bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee Univ. in 1923. He earned his master's degree from the Univ. of Virginia in 1924 and a second master's, in history, from Princeton. He completed course work at Johns Hopkins for his doctorate, started an his dissertation, and his thesis adviser died. The thesis died too. He returned to Ferrum in 1927 and three years later went to Western Maryland College as assistant professor of political science, eventually becoming the head of that department. He retired in 1965 as professor emeritus and returned to Ferrum College as professor of history and dean of the division of social sciences, where he continued until his second retirement, in 1970. His distinguished career was marked by numerous honors, extensive scholarly writing, warmth of relations with students, and the unbounded gratitude of many whom he also assisted financially. To his widow, Mary Ann Wescott Hurt, we extend our condolences on his passing.
