Frank J. Gratzer *71

Frank Gratzer, a retired electrical engineer who had been with Bell Laboratories and its successors for 30 years, died at his home Oct. 24, 2010, of Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was 65.

He graduated from Manhattan College in 1966, and in 1971 was awarded a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Princeton. He then joined Bell Labs.

Later, as executive director of Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), he was responsible for broadband data services. Gratzer was awarded the Bellcore CEO Award for his contributions to the telecommunications system of Greece.

In retirement, Gratzer enjoyed tutoring students in math and physics at Raritan Valley Community College. Dedicated to staying in shape, he swam in a pool three times a week for more than 30 years.

Gratzer is survived by Ann, his wife of 41 years; two daughters, Allison Gratzer ’03 and Carolyn Gratzer Cope ’98 s’98; two granddaughters; and his father, Frank Sr.
