Frank Rich Metcalf ’33

Body

FRANK METCALF, described by the Auburn, N.Y., CITZEN as a businessman and sportsman, died on Oct. 5, 1989, at his home in Union Springs, N.Y. He was 80. Bob Keidel '33 and Fred Hamilton '34 attended the memorial service.

Frank was born in Auburn and lived there all his life. He spent summers on Martha's Vineyard and, in later years, Key Largo, Fla. Many classmates will remember a lovely party Frank and Libby gave at the winter reunion some years ago at the Ocean Reef Club. Frank prepared at Northwood School. In college, he worked on the TIGER, played 150-lb. football, and roomed with Fred Hamilton. On graduation, Frank joined the family business, Columbian Rope Co. He became its chairman and retired in 1976. He also was president of the Chamber of Commerce, a director of many banks and other firms, and a member of several clubs. Frank was an active sailor on Cayuga Lake, at the Vineyard, and, most recently, at Ocean Reef. He also was an artist, painting mostly in oils.

Frank married Elizabeth Flint on May 25, 1935, in Fitchburg, Mass. She survives him. They had three children, Peter '59, of Skaneateles, N.Y., Elizabeth Mattison, of Canandaigua, N.Y., and Philip '64, of Reston, Va. There are five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Two brothers also survive: Edwin R. '32, of Tequesta, Fla., and George R. '36, of Auburn. The Class of '33 has lost a good friend and extends its sympathy to all the family.
