Frank Willard Elmendorf ’40

Body

HEALTH AND WELFARE executive Bill Elmendorf died from a massive heart attack on Feb. 28, 1990. He had been living in retirement in Dunedin, Fla. The various agencies with which he was connected over a span of some 30 years included the American Cancer Society, American Heart Assn., Planned Parenthood Foundation, and the Crippled Children's Society. Of this work Bill wrote in our 25th Year Book, "Though it may not be the most lucrative, my career in health and welfare is satisfying and allows for a pleasant family life. I travel widely and meet many." He had lived in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Chicago, Reno, and Cincinnati.

Bill, the son of Frank W. Elmendorf '12, was from N.J. and prepared at Blair. He majored in economics and was a member of Terrace. From 1942 to 1946 he served as an officer and pilot in the Army Air Corps. In retirement, he kept busy with investments, sailing, fishing, and social activities among family and friends.

Bill is survived by his widow, Beth, and twin sons, Frank W. '67 and James L. Bill. He was indeed missed by his classmates and friends at our 50th reunion in June-a celebration he had every intention of attending, and was looking forward to it with eagerness. The Class bids a fond farewell to another friend and classmate, and sends its full sympathy to the Elmendorf family.
