Franklin Cleland, a longtime research scientist with Shell Development Co., died Dec. 20, 2009, at the age of 81.

Cleland graduated from Texas A&M University in 1950, and earned a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Princeton in 1954. He then joined Shell for a 34-year career in a variety of research and management positions.  

Caring about protecting the environment, he served several years on the Central Oregon Audubon Society’s board of directors. A bird watcher and avid wildlife photographer, he traveled throughout the United States, Can-

ada, and Australia photographing hundreds of bird species in their natural habitats. His photographs have been displayed in art galleries and auctions, as well as published in field guides, calendars, and postal cards.

Cleland had been on the board of the APGA and a member of the advisory council of the Department of Chemical Engineering.

He is survived by Joanne, his wife of 53 years; his daughter, Anne; a son, Todd ’83; and five granddaughters.

Graduate memorials are prepared by the APGA.
