Fred D. Sauter ’37

Body

ATHLETE, HORSEMAN and very ardent Princetonian Bud Sauter died Sept. 21, 1994, after suffering a stroke. He left his wife of 54 years, Caroline; daughters Lyn, Frances, and Nancy; and nine grandchildren. Bud prepared at Lawrenceville. At Princeton, he majored in geology, got honors junior year, won eight letters in basketball (capt., 1937) and baseball, and was a member of the Undergraduate Council and Tiger Inn. He was awarded the Bunn Trophy for leadership and sportsmanship.

He continued his education with night work at Northwestern School of Commerce and trained at Marsh & McLennan and the New Hampshire Fire Insurance Co. Then, he served four years in the army artillery, emerging a major. Thereafter, he ran his own successful insurance agency. He retired in 1976, and moved to Tryon, N.C.

For 15 years, he was president of the Thunder Mountain Ranch Co. in Wisconsin. He was a life trustee of Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C.; a trustee of Brevard Music Center in North Carolina; and on the school board at Kenilworth.

Need a job done for Princeton? Bud always said yes—he served the class's Annual Giving drive, as president of the Chicago Princeton Club, on the schools committee, and as a graduate council representative. He attended class luncheons, regional conferences, you name it. Before the 50th, he became bionic, with a replaced ankle and shoulder. The class will miss him greatly and sends its condolences to his family.
