FRED CLEAVELAND ("Red") died on Jan. 24, 1990, at his home in Mill Valley, Calif., after a long illness. He prepared at Andover. At Princeton he majored in psychology and was a member of Charter. After college Fred worked for a year as secretary of the Princeton Fund Committee. He then went west to LA and entered the casualty insurance business with the Royal-Liverpool Groups. On July I, 1932, he married Helen Allison. She died in Feb. 1970. They had three children, James R., John A., and Jane Balleisen. Fred moved to San Francisco in 1948, and worked as an underwriter with the Hartford Accident and Indemnity Co. He taught courses in insurance at Golden Gate College in S.F. He was a member of the local Sanitary District Board and of the Boy Scout Troop Committee. He was active in the Episcopal Church, as a vestryman, junior warden, and senior warden, and then entered a course of study leading to his ordination as a perpetual deacon in 1963. He said, "My church activity has been my only lifetime achievement of any consequence." He retired in 1969.

He married Catherine Wheeler on Apr. 17, 1971. She survives him, as do three children and four grandchildren. Fred was an enthusiastic Princetonian. He served as secretary/treasurer of the Princeton Club of Southern Calif. Catherine has remarked, "His Princeton years were as meaningful to him as his church."

Fred's classmates remember him for his good humor and warm friendliness, and join with his family in sympathizing sorrow and gratitude for his life.
