Fred S. Ensley Jr. ’45

Fred Endsley died April 9, 2011 in Naples, Fla., after a struggle with Parkinson’s disease.

Fred entered Princeton from Western Military Academy and joined Quadrangle. He received his Princeton degree in biology and was sent by the Navy to Harvard for medical studies, receiving a graduate degree from that institution in 1949. Afterward he trained in surgery at Baylor University and served as a Navy surgeon in the Korean War, later practicing in Provo, Utah; Santa Barbara, Calif.; and Chicago before retiring. Fred served on the medical faculty at Northwestern University.

An adventurer at heart, Fred distinguished himself by climbing Mount Everest when he was in his 60s and rode in competitive bike races as long as his health permitted.

Fred married the former Patricia Hiles, who predeceased him. He is survived by a son, Scott; a daughter, Ellen Garland; his brother, David; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving is his second wife, the former Helen Englebright. The class extends its sympathy to the family.
