Frederic Jordan Schaettler ’42

Fred was born in New York City, the son of Frederic V. Schaettler ’17. He prepared at the Collegiate School and St. Andrew’s. At Princeton he rowed on the freshman and varsity 150-pound crews, was a member of Whig-Clio and Tower Club, and graduated with honors in history. Fred roomed in Blair with Walter Guzzardi his last three years at Princeton.

After graduation, Fred served as an aeronautical engineer with the Air Transport Command. He later received an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

The bulk of his business career was spent with IBM, where at various times, he was branch manager in Providence, R.I., administrative assistant to the chairman, and director of the litigation department.

Fred and his wife, Lydia, loved to travel. He also was an avid golfer and bridge player. Fred never lost his sense of humor or his ability to make and keep friends. He was prominent as an oarsman in the class crew at our 50th reunion.

To Lydia; his daughter, Lydia Brandes; his son, John; and two grandchildren, the class sends its sympathy.
