Frederick Gnichtel Hammitt ’45
Fred Hammitt died on June 29,1989, at the Jersey Shore Medical Center, in Neptune, N.J. Fred spent his distin¬guished career at the Univ. of Michigan, but after he retired in 1986, he returned to his beloved native state.
Fred entered Princeton from Lawrenceville, and dur¬ing his short career at Princeton, he won the Joe Brown Boxing Trophy. He then entered the Navy and was an engineering officer on a minesweeper in the Pacific. Although the V-12 Program took him to Cornell, he received a degree from Princeton in 1944. Thereafter, he received advanced degrees from Penn and the Ste¬vens Inst. of Technology. He obtained his doctorate in nuclear engineering at the Univ. of Michigan, where he was a professor of nuclear and mechanical engineering from 1958 until he retired. Fred authored many books and articles in his field and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the In¬ternational Assn. for Hydraulic Research.
Fred is survived by his widow, Barbara Hill Hammitt (Smith '48); two sons, Frederick G. Jr. '72, of Madison, N.J., and Harry A., of Lynchburg, Va.; a daughter, Jane S. Duarte, of Arlington, Va.; a brother, Andrew G. Jr. '46; eight grandchildren; and three nephews. The sympathy of the class is extended to all.
