FRED KNOCKE, M.D., died of cancer Nov. 13, 1994, in Troy, Mich. He was 80. Fred prepared at Horace Mann School. He majored in biology, roomed with Norr Schonfeld, and belonged to Gateway Club.

He obtained his medical degree from Cornell Medical School, and started what became a distinguished career in orthopedics at Lenox Hill and New York Orthopedic Hospitals. Following service with the Third Army in Europe at an evacuation hospital, where he rose to the rank of captain, he joined the staff at Hunterdon Medical Center (N.J.). He served as C.E.O. at the center until he retired in 1975. He was active in a number of medical societies, particularly in orthopedics. 

Fred married Lazelle Schwarten in 1942, divorced her in 1978, and married Francine Gulick. There were three daughters, Diane Kohout, Dorothy Maxfield, Martha Schmitt-Schlakau, and two stepdaughters, Susane Morris and Barbara Phillips. Seven grand­children also survive.

Fred greatly enjoyed a life-long hobby of gardening, and had a showplace of dahlia and iris at his Readington, N.J., home. On moving to Michigan in 1976, he continued growing iris and hybrid hemerocallis and hosted national and regional garden tours. Fred was buried with full military honors in Arlington Natl Cemetery.
