Frederick L. Hyer ’28
Frederick Lewis Hyer died Jan. 22, 1995. He had lived in Brielle, N.J., for 20 years, moving from Plainfield after he retired in 1972. He prepared at Pingry School and was later v.p. of the Pingry alumni assn. At Princeton, he played lacrosse and was a member of Elm Club.
From 1929-49, he worked at Natl. City Bank, Empire Trust Co., Grace Natl. Bank, and Bankers Trust Co. He was in the Naval Reserve from 1943-67. During the war, he became a lt. commander and served at the Naval Dry Docks, on Terminal Island, Calif., and on the U.S.S. Barnstable and the U.S.S. Aldebaran in the South Pacific. From 1950-72, he was with the Plainfield Trust Co. (later known as United Natl. Bank) as a v.p. and sr. loan officer.
Fred married Elizabeth Gordon Runnells June 14, 1939. They had one son, Fred Jr. '67; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. In 1951, he married Charlotte Peterson, whose brother was William '36.
Fred was always a leader in university and class affairs. He was co-chairman of off-year reunions in the 1950s and '60s, and was chairman of our 50th and 60th reunions. He was president of the class from 1988-93. An efficient leader and a tireless source of class fellowship, his classmates will remember him with gratitude and affection.
