Frederick S. Strong III ’35

Body

Fritz died May 22, 2010, in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Michigan, he came to Princeton from St. Paul’s School. A history major, he was on the swimming team, was in ROTC, and was a member of Cloister Inn. His senior year roommate in Little Hall was Fred Griffiths. During World War II he served in the Pacific in the Army, separating as a major. While there he met Mary West, a Red Cross volunteer, and they were married in 1948. She predeceased him in 1987.

After a stint with Ford Motor Co., Fritz worked for the National Bank of Detroit for the rest of his career, retiring in 1978 as vice president and trust officer. In retirement he divided his time between Michigan, Long Island, N.Y., and Vero Beach, Fla. A golfer, bridge player, and croquet player into his 80s, Fritz was a regular at our major reunions.

He is survived by his children, Frederick IV, Robert, and Eugenie; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister. His brother, John ’38, and a sister, Marjorie Strong Peterson, predeceased him.
