Frederick Van Loan Pindar ’33
Fred Pindar died Dec. 22, 1994, in Palo Alto, Calif. A New Jersey native, he prepared for Princeton at Lawrenceville.
After graduation, he became involved in academic and scientific administration, and that became his life work. He worked for a while in Kansas, and then spent seven years at the Univ. of Pennsylvania. In 1949, he went to Stanford, where he served as business manager for various laboratories and scientific entities. His career included a 16-year stint at the S.L.A.C. (Stanford Linear Accelerator Center), from which he retired in 1977.
He was held in high regard for his negotiating skills and his business acumen. Remembering Fred, the director emeritus of S.L.A.C. said, "While Fred was all-knowing in business matters, he never lost sight of the fact that the purpose of institutions like the Microwave Laboratory, the Hansen Laboratory, and S.L.A.C. was to do science. Another said, "He was an extremely fine gentleman and it was a pleasure to work with him for so many years."
Fred led a useful life, had a wry sense of humor and was a caring husband and parent. He will be missed by all who knew him. We extend our sympathy to his wife, Sara; his son Fred, who made this report possible; his daughter Maia; and his sisters, Jean P. Pindar and Elizabeth P. Guernsey.
