G. Daniel Little ’51

Dan was born Dec. 18, 1929, in St. Louis and came to Princeton from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill.  

A philosophy major at Princeton, he was president of the Westminster Fellowship, sang in the Glee Club and Chapel Choir, and belonged to Prospect Club. He roomed with Bardsley, Eckstein, Lawrence, Mays, Nesbitt, Paxton, and Sykes.  

Dan attended McCormick Theological Seminary, where, in 1954, he became the fifth-generation minister in his family. There he met Joan McCafferty, and the two of them married and embarked on a lifelong partnership in Presbyterian ministry.  

In 1962 he joined the United Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (UPCUSA) Board of National Missions in New York and settled in Ridgewood, N.J., for the next 22 years. In 1977 he became executive director of the General Assembly Mission Council, followed by terms as interim president of McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. In the course of his ministry he served parishes in Pittsburgh, Ithaca, N.Y., Prairie Village, Kan., and Minneapolis.  

Dan died of brain cancer Nov. 16, 2009, in Madison, Wis. He is survived by his children, Deborah Cohn, Alice Grevet, the Rev. Daniel Anderson-Little ’84, and Benjamin Little; seven grandchildren; and his brother, David. He was predeceased by his wife, daughter Cynthia, and brother Henry.
